Be Inspired by the World Around You

Summer is going strong, and my over-active imagination is running in different directions. Story ideas still flood my brain, but they’re more like half-baked cookies: not ready to eat yet. But I take pictures to remind me of the stories I’m going to tell.

How do you gather ideas when you don’t have the bandwidth to explore them immediately?

  1. When I get ideas I’m mostly concerned with that particular fleeting emotion. So I try to capture it as intensely as I possibly can in one paragraph. It’s very wordy, grammatically incorrect and ‘bad’ in the general sense of writing, but it serves as a beautiful raw essence of that moment. It is also very cathartic to write something just for your own pleasure without the nagging critic in your mind.
This reminds I need to collect all of the scraps into a place… I’ll do that……. tomorrow.. yes… Tomorrow…

    • Nice! I do that sometimes too. But I like to capture the image in a photo as well. It keeps my mind fresh for those not quite right descriptions.

  2. Photography can be a great way to capture an idea—if I remember to take a photo! Otherwise, I try to jot down the idea as best I can, hoping it will be enough to remind me of the feelings it evoked.,..

    • To be honest, that’s probably a better approach. I’m better at capturing feelings through words than through my camera phone. Still, when the notebook is far away…

  3. I sometimes capture a character or story thought inside a twitter fic. I used to just tattoo story ideas to my body…but that got messy…

    • Yeah, you can only really do that 20-30 times.

      • If you’re a Hollywood screenwriter, that’s all you need!

  4. I keep a file with 1 lines to 1 page of notes on whatever the idea was.🙂 Usually they are transposed from post-its and napkins.😉

    • As I moved out of my apartment, I found a bunch of those. Half-forgotten lines scrambled down on the backsides of receipts and napkins. Was some good stuff there too!
